MySQL 4.1.7 problems

This post might be out of place but I really need help!

Does anyone here have a myql 4.1.7 with apache 2.xx and php 5?

I have the php and apache working fine but I just can`t connect to any of the databases. Not even at using "localhost" and "root"! And if I use the password that I typed during the mysql setup I get "Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client"

What is the problem here? Anyone encountered this?
