How do you identify mobile browsers for customization

Can someone help me on how to identify mobile browsers?

I need to make a mobile (wap) version of our website that serves different content based on different cell phones. For example a mobile phone with a large color screen can get served a large color image, while an older phone, with a small black and white screen only get served text.

So, does anyone have any experience with mobile programming and what information can be pulled out from the different cell phones requesting pages from our server?
