decoding php

I was wondering if someone could tell me if prtected php code can be decoded (unprotected)
I am not wanting to know if it is legal,moral or anything else I just want to know if it can be decoded? or is it impossible

Of course, this depends on your encoder, but the answer I usually see is 'very, very difficult indeed.' If it's just a code obfuscator, that's a different issue altogether - the code is there, it's just not particularly legible.
