Hi all, been doing web design for about 7 years now and I am quite comfortable with all the 'basic' programming languages such as HTML, Javascript, CSS, etc (learned them in notepad, so I know the REAL language). I recently decided to "go pro" and do this as a career (Being an Architect wasn't fun anymore). So...what I need is a good resource for teaching myself. The hosting company I use runs Apache, so it would be best for me to learn the LAMP setup first. I've had good luck with the SAMS and 'Complete Reference' series of books, and I guess I just want to know what you all recommend as both basic and advanced books? Soemthing that ties PHP/mySQL/Pearl together seems logical to me. Any feedback would be most helpful. Thanks!

Hi Padraic,

If you want some good quality online books/tutorials [one's that have working examples etc] then go to hotscripts.com

you will find everything in programming language order, and in each one is a tips & tutorials section - this is how I started, and I found them _extremly_ easy to use, and informative.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
William

for php and mysql the sites they have are so comprehensive, especially including the user comments, you can easily start there.

When I started with PHP & MySQL I read:

PHP and MySQL Web Development
by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson
ISBN: 0672317842

It helped me get going pretty quickly.

I've always been a heavy O'Reilly supporter. Their books, for every language, are unbelievable.

I use(d) the PHP Bible among others already mentioned.
Good book.
