GD library and thumb creation

hey,

have a script for image galleries form back in time when i first started with php. nothing fancy, just reading directories and stuff. i was thinking of adding a way of creating thumbs. now my q is: when doing on the fly thumbs, that would create some server load and maybe even make things a little bit slower right? it would be better to do it once and save the thumbs for 'future' reference rite?

any comments?
