writing on behalf of user of a large php based forum. Unsure which one it is, but very up to date and modern, maybe phpBB itself....

there is one thread that is nearly 600 pages long that is being posted too 100 times a day and some members are complaining about it slowing the forum down although this is very much circumstantial and not proven. The forum is very very busy anyway....is the presence of such a large thread likely to cause performance issues or not?

well, I would say yes. Lots of PHP action with large amounts of stuff going in and out of memory will slow things down, if the server hardware isn't powerful enough to handle it.

It's up to the server administrator to diagnose where the "bottleneck" is. The sluggish response could also be a limitation of bandwidth!
