I'd like to know if there is any open source php software that has the functionality of groups, specifically that of meetup.com. Will be quite grateful for any responses!

I can`t think of anything offhand. Sounds like something you would have to custom build. There would no doubt we similar things you could probably adapt, so look on Hotscripts.com or Sourceforge.
