The PHP development team is proud to announce the availability of the first release candidate of PHP 5.3.0 (PHP 5.3.0RC1). This release marks the final phase in a major improvement in the 5.X series, which includes a large number of new features, bug fixes and security enhancements.

Personally I've been playing around quite a bit more with SPL Functions so I am looking forward to testing the bug fixes and improvements to ext/spl to see if Directory Iteration has improved.

The question I have is, what are your thoughts in regards to rollout of 5.3 with PHP6 seemingly coming right around the corner? Do you think shared hosting providers are going to "jump" a release level? I know there are many, many, many servers still running the PHP4 branch.

On a new server my Sys Admin has installed the 5.2++ version that addresses most of updates and security issues, I do not feel, unless major flaw discovery, a need to go further. Instead there is a real need to review all scripts for php6 compatibility.
For ex: ereg is no longer supported and it looks like info on the ternary op is not clear about changes.
And more and more…..
