Word verification during registration

I want new users to verify a word from an image before registration just the way its commonly used these days..

One thing I can Think of is creating some 10-15 images, and storing its references in a separate database along with a column containing the actual word. Ask user to enter the word correctly and then compare.
Will this think work from security point of view?. I mean with less no. of images in database?
and how to get a random image every time?
