Converting and image from a URL when it's going to be shown

Hi every one, i need a code a simple one that convert an image format from a URL at the same time when the pic is going to be show on the webpage - for example it's .jpg but when it wanna be shown it shows .gif

thanks for the link [php.net] that was given but there isn't exactly what is said in the list of Codes.
as u ask why i wanna do that, i put a code on a webpage that get an image from a site like a chart that statistics on chart is not static - but loading of it wants more time i wanna use a code and give that image link to code that while it's showing that process of converting to a format like .gif starts.just this ...
if there is any other code or ... would u exactly put it here thanks
