custom 404 error page using .htaccess please help

i need help with making a custom 404 error page using .htaccess

i read the post by indiandomain ([webmasterworld.com ]) and tried using the code in my .htaccess file and made a corosponding 404.php script, but it doesn't work (i get an error message saying "Internal Server error because $uri is not recognized), and the variable $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] doesn't work either. can anyone help me?

no, i tried all of it, but it says that $uri is unsupported, and putting it in the 404.php doesn't work either

does the custom 404 actually work? does it get sent to the proper script?
