PHPBB Link Keywords In Posts

I'm running phpbb 3.0 and would like tho check each post against a large list of keywords (30K) and replace each keyword with a link.

I'm thinking about doing it at post time but not sure how it will degrade the performance. Other option is to run a cron job on the db each day.

Also would like any tips for optimizing this code so it runs fast. I am assuming I will store the keywords in an array and do a str_replace but it seems like that will take a lot of resources from the server.

Any suggestions?

If it is in a certain pattern, I believe it can also be achieved by mod rewriting.
