I thought I made this post yesterday and even got an email telling me there was a reply... yet I see no sign of the post...

In any case, I want to prevent bot spoofing on my site. I have seen some scripts that do revernse DNS lookup. Some use mysql to cache IP addresses. I am just wondering the most efficient way to do this. I suppose I have to have an entry point script on my site do the test. Will this slow my site down noticeably?

If anyone can post links to effective scripts, that would be great.

thanks,

brian

Efficient? What about effective? Which is the primary focus? They often go hand in hand but indeed have two entirely different definitions. Effective means you do not want to block an IP that should not be blocked. In the document referred to you by member whoisgregg in your other thread How to allow googlebot to spider? [webmasterworld.com] there is reference to this fact by Google in regard to the possibility of a changed (reassigned) IP number.

If anyone can post links to effective scripts, that would be great.

In the PHP Forum here at WebmasterWorld we tend to teach and learn from each other as opposed to look for pre-packaged scripts. Please review our forum Charter [webmasterworld.com] for more information in this regard.
