Web "Application" Window

Hi,

I have notcied recently that many websties are incorporating a feature that Im really not too sure of what its called.

Basically, what happens, lets say i click a form submit button. The backround gets "Dim" and a new window appears in the foreground.

What is this called?

Most of them are likely using lightbox or thickbox, or a variation/derivation. They're both javascript.
