Verifying a user via a Mobile message, how is this done?

Not exactly a PHP quesiton per say, but wondering how it is done.

on some sites, to verify your user account, they will send you a Text message to your mobile that you have to enter to verify your account.

How is this done? What kind of mobile service provides this feature? expensive?

Not expensive at all. There are specific email address per provider that allow you to send text messages through an email. A quick Google search [google.com] should yield some of the specifics. So you'd just have to know which provider they use in order to do that, so include that on the contact information form in a select box.

you just need an interface to aome sms providers gateway (we use 2Ergo in the UK for our SMS)

Generate some random security pin and send the sms the user then enters the pin and you can authenticate

it gets a little more complicated if you want to do a MO (mobile origionated) authentiaction you need to capture - took me a couple of days to get our incoming sms handeler working.

so what does it work out to roughly cost wise? Your not paying .10 per text message are you? That could get costly on a per user basis!
