creating a gallery

Hi, i'd like to create my own gallery script.

However, i've never built one before, and so have no knowledge of the gd library of creating thumbnails and making them clickable to bigger versions, certain amount of images on a page..linking to pages etc..

How would i start? Obviously one bit at a time is the way i'd want to go..building the thumbs first and building on that with certain amount of thumbs per page etc..

Is it relatively easy or complicated?
