Hello,

I'm mostly into online marketing and SEO. Of course I want to be able to create my own sites (html and CSS). However for some of my ideas I would have to be able to code some stuff in PHP & mySQL.

For example I'm thinking about creating a tool for a vocabulary list. Which contains all the vocabulary of the original vocabulary list and asks the person who wants to practice one of those words randomly (and then another one, etc.).

Possibly also allow them to be able to add their own words to it.

maybe not display the vocabulary randomly, but display those that were answered incorrectly more often, for example until they've been replied to correctly for the last 3 times.

And maybe with a feature that gives them only 5 seconds or 10 seconds or 15 seconds (or...seconds) to reply (this one might sound strange, but it'd be more useful for another idea I have).

I'm also interested in learning how to implement polls and forms (using pre-existing scripts from php-board, I guess).

I was hoping that it wouldn't be all that hard to learn these things as I'm not trying to code something very complicated (I mean it seems like it's not at the same level as coding a forum from scratch and making sure it's relatively hack-safe, etc.).

I don't plan on learning this right now, but was wondering how much time I should expect to set aside for learning these php & mySQL skills. About as much time as it'll take me to learn decent HTML & CSS? (alot) more?

Good question ;)

We each have different skill sets and learning abilities. I learned MySQL in just a couple hours but I also have an extensive database background. Same with PHP, but I've been programming most of my life. Am I still learning both? Absolutely. Things change and we are continually improving our skill set.

HOW to learn is about as big a question as HOW LONG to learn. For example, do you receive instruction well from a teacher? Would it be best for you to take an educational course? Or are you proficient in self-schooling and could you take a project listed here and start applying basics to advance your knowledge?

If you are interested at all in a future with PHP and MySQL, I would certainly begin today by reading the tutorials provided on each site in the documentation areas and go from there. If you have specific questions, forum communities are a great resource and we are always happy to assist here at WebmasterWorld. Our best to you!
