I have been dabbling in php and see that it has great potential for website development.

It appears that there are heaps of opportunities on the net and few people able to fill them. Is this a 'real' observation or am I seeing it wrong?

Does anyone have any recomendations on how to become a professional in the field? What would potential employers look for to show the ability of the applicant?

Would doing the Zend course be the best recognised training?

Any ideas gratefully recieved.

I'd say the best 'training' you are going to get is from constantly practicing. Hang around this forum long enough and you'll soon find yourself to be an expert--or at least close enough to one that it will count. If I was going to hire a PHP programmer I wouldn't be too worried about their 'training', but more so on their portfolio; if you have a good one you will get hired :)
