I am looking to start an interactive website where people of this specific hobby can log in, create profiles, upload pictures, etc. After doing some research on just how to create a website like this I've found a good CMS is key. I think I am going to use Drupal but it does look a bit complicated (and maybe more than I need). Is there another CMS that is easier to set up but will still do what I am looking for?

Check out Opensourcecms.com there is a huge list of ms there that you can evaluate.

For your issue you could use many, Joomla, Drupal, ezPublish, TYPO3 etc.

Personally, I'm not keen on Joomla, although it has a huge number of plugins I find it to be less intuitive and slightly slower and more complicated to perform simple tasks than the others.

I like ezPublish but it is only officially supported on PHP4. I find it easy and fast to use.

TYPO3 is probably the fastest and most powerful, but as it is new it has a limited plugin directory compared to the others, and it can get very complicated to customise.

If I were you I would go for ezPublish, but bare in mind, whatever your choice, you will need to spend considerable time working things out.

But its worth it in the end ;-)
