Using Salt for passwords

I am new to PHP and am trying to start an ecommerce store and need to encrypt password. Having trouble with Salt. Where can I find some info on how to go about this. And do you need to have some type of validation when someone wants to log back into your site.

I can get the passwords encrypted AFTER they are inserted into the mysql database but can not get them encrypted before going into the database. What are some of the things I may be doing wrong

Any help will be most appreciated. Thanks
