Just as simple question, anyone know how or where (which gateway) you could use to send cell phones text messages with PHP?

Thanks

I don't think you need a PHP script per se, but rather some software to turn your server into an SMS server (although I am not completely sure!).

I'd be interested to know how it's done.

How about this: [kannel.org...]

I think you'll need to install the obvious server software and prob an API (through a subscription) with a telecoms company! Sounds a bit long! For my site, I use clickatell. I basically pay about 1-2p + VAT (so about 3p) per text! Nice!

I also use clickatel and send an e-mail to the clickatel gateway server for each sms I want to send - details for mutiple ways are on their site.

I guess it goes without saying but test the gateway works with the network you want to sms first, as most operators use GT filters to prevent undesireable gateways from sending sms in to them. Some gateways get used for pretty well nothing but spam and it becomes a nuisance.

ahmedtheking and Mr Bo Jangles, I am considering using Clickatell, how do you rate them? I'd need to send SMS all over the world. How's their network coverage in practice?

Well I've only ever had to send SMS to UK, but they're spot on! You buy in bulk and £30 will get your around 1000 SMSs. There's never been a time when the service has been down, and on tests, I've never had to wait for than 20secs for the SMS to come; I tested on Orange, O2, T-Mobile, Vodafone and 3 (the slowest!).

I have been using them for 4 years - very good service, no real complaints - I should think they are a world leader in this business.

Do texts sent outside the UK arrive quickly?
