Why can't I find one?

I was thinking about writing a function to return a list of synonyms for a given word. I thought that I could suck in Roget's Thesaurus, parse the contents, and write them to a db in a structured state.

But that sounded like too much work (on my lunch break).

If a thesaurus web service existed, it would make my job easy. I could just make a simple call over HTTP.

But, when I went looking for a webservice, I couldn't find one. Why is this?
