Cron job is not available in most hosts?

Hello,

I am contacting lot of hosts to ask about Cron Jobs if they are available in their Unix package...

But most they no no no... so i don get what to do if i want to run something every hour..

Last respond when i asked if they have alternative was:

"We dont have an alternative.. if 1000 users wanted cronjob the server would crash.. thats why."

So its so strange...

Is it best to set up my own server? though i dono how...

Shared hostings do not allow cron job. They are right about crashing the server. It is time to get a dedicated server. If you cannot afford, cheer up. Get a Virtual Private Server (VPS). It works like a dedicated server and allow you do to cron job and at a much cheaper affordable price.

But i know there are some shared with cronjobs, and i am already hosting at one of them.. but i am searching for a shared host with cron jobs in Sweden!

Anyways, can u give me a link or something so i can learn more about VPS and also if possible how to set up own server... (is it easy if i know nothing about it?) or should i buy a book?

and how much cheap it could be :)

Set up your own server? Easy or difficult it all depends on you. If you know Linux, I am sure it shouldn't be a problem. Get a book if you think you need it, but make sure you get a good comprehensive one.

I have too many books that I do not have time to read. I have given up on books and now relying on free information online.

You can get a good VPS at minimum US$20-35 per month. I am not sure how much you are paying for your current shared hosting, but if US$25 above is not a problem for you, I suggest you get a VPS as you are able to host unlimited domains.

VPS basically works almost like a dedicated server.

You might want to check out on VPS at web hosting related forums. If you Google for web hosting forum, I am sure you will find one.

Can you try something like this:
Set up a page on your server that is not linked to any other page (maybe even pwd protect it, etc.). That page should call a PHP (or other language of your choice) script which performs ‘cron job’ tasks that you want to.
Now, on your home computer, you can set up a scheduler, or cron job, to call that page at predetermined times.
I haven’t tried this ‘poor man cron job’ approach; it’s just an idea. It has it flaws – in order to work you must be connected to the net at certain times (not an issue if you have DSL, etc.), it won’t work if you have a power outage at your home, etc….

My host have VDS and its for good price, but there are distributions that ive to choose from and i dono anything about that!

So what is the difference between all these:

Debian 3.0(Woddy)
Debian 3.1(Sarge)
RedHat Fedora Core 2
RedHat Fedora Core 3
Mandriva LE 2005 (Mandrake)
RedHat 9.0

I like Red Hat but this is not RH entreprise

Fedora is also very solid

your next question to your ISP ought to be abour control panel

for ex: RH and Fedora are often presented with dif control panel

Unless your ISP has implemented their own

with the answer ask for a manual on line
review the manual
search about the CP on line and make an educated choice

Shared hosts do allow cron jobs but the granularity is widened for the frequency of the job. Usually, they set it to no more than 1 job per X hours.

Google for free cron job websites that initiate the job to call on a PHP script on your website. I know they exist out there because I used it before - can't remember the name off hand.
