MySql and data management

A good script?

Can anyone recommend a good script for data management on a PHP/MySql site. My server has an admin function on the control panel for MySql but I find it a little clunky after using MySql Front on my local machine.

I have found phpmyadmin to be pretty good. I havent used it a great deal but it does the job, looks clean and is pretty easy to use.

Its simple to install, and once you get into it, you can look deeper at the SQL and PHP needed to do what you want - in the fastest way possible...

I'm getting into the habit of just using basic text files to build a db and upload them with the above program.

It's maybe also worth downloading php and mySQL to run on your own computer so you can get used to it without sitting through a not so good connection.

phpmyadmin is the way to go, Very sweet features and one of the few MySQL admins that continue to just get better and better.

Thanks for all the advice. I have uploaded phpmyadmin onto my server and it is working quite nicely. The only thing that concerns me is security. I have setup the auth through HTTP, is this sufficient bearing in mind that there is no sensitive data in the database?

If you set up a mysql account that can be accessed by hosts other than localhost, you can also use mysqlfront (http://www.anse.de/mysqlfront/) which can run on your local machine. There are advantages of not being forced to create the entire interface in HTML (phpMyAdmin), but, I admin phpMyAdmin is an awesome product as well.

I totally concur - PHPMyAdmin is the cat's meow for having complete access to your MySQL db with tools for everything you'll need to do to maintain one or more dbs.

I agree with that andreasfriedrich, it makes a lot more sense and is a lot easier that way. It gives you full control.

Thanks again everyone! I have been using MySqlfront on my local machine but my present host will not allow "anyone" access so I can't use it for a few of my sites. I now have a new host for my new sites which has phpmyadmin already installed which saves a lot of time.

MySql front appealed as it involved no control panels etc and I could get straight on and do some work!

How many hosts allow "anyone" access to their MySql databases?
