folder permissions

Are there any implications of having a folder's permissions on the web server set to 777?

I have a folder that is used to store files that users upload (avatars, music files, etc.) and I assume it needs to be set to 777 so that the file can be saved?

I'm really not sure but if your server allows anonymous ftp logins then perhaps someone could upload, overwrite, and delete files from that directory?

Good question to ask though don't go on my word on this.
