With the 3 security patches I guess it would be wise to get current :)

Does anyone know the planned extent of support for PHP4? Meaning, how long does the development team intend to distribute patches and support for PHP4?

Interesting question coop. Seeing as most web hosting companies seem reluctant to make the switch to v5, v4 support might be around for a while yet.

all I know is they are seperate branches and are supposed to stay that way. I haven't heard any projections about when or if it will end.

I asked many times the same question
PHP4 ... PHP5
I started to dev for 5 as soon as it was around and as soon as I was able to set it on a dedicated server. What’s triggered the shift? An attraction to new features and old scripts that fell.
However I can first hand say that in a shared environment you need to afford the very top of the category to own your PHP and therefore requesting 5
I once a few months ago warned an ISP that was going to set 5 as a default
That too many different users’ scripts were not ready and that many sites used “borrowed script” that the site owner will never be able to update.
It happened as I forecasted and they had to revise the shifting date and as of today I can tell that nothing changed!
On another hand if it will not be today (PHP5) it will be tomorrow and then script users will need to try to understand how it works :)
Don’t you love it!
