I think you have to just download them and try them until you find one that suits you.
It's to the point where there are literally a couple dozen "best" free and open CMSes, all with their proponents and detractors, all with their own "must have" features and all with their "gaping hole" missing feature, or, lacking that, their "kitchen sink" weight.
So I've played with Xoops and didn't care for it, but most people using Xoops have played with several other CMS and decided it was the best. Most of these are easy to install. Some are a simple one-click install by default, others require a *bit* more effort but can often be installed in one-click on a shared host running Fantastico (drupal for example)
