i don't bother to check for AV spiders very often, but i checked one (fairly new) site today and so far this month:
Scooter-W3.1.2 206 hits
Scooter-3.0.3 3 hits
Scooter-3.0.3_RT 1 hit

this is a 45 page site. Scooter-W3.1.2 is blocked in the robots.txt file - as AV doesn't want to list sites, there's no point letting them spider it.

other 'spiders' hitting the site (not a complete list) are:
Googlebot/2.1 48 hits
AskJeeves 45 hits
ScoutAbout (???) 39 hits
Inktomi 28 hits (3 UAs)
Mirago 3 hits
FAST 5 hits (2 UAs)
IncyWincy 1 hit

can anyone explain the difference between the various AV user agents?

Hmmm...it comes from 209.73.162.13 which is typical. BTW if you are collecting Altavista UA's you'll want Scooter-3.0.3_SNP, Scooter-3.0.3_JT and Scooter-3.0.3.
