This is worrying, because if AV is spidering my homepage every week won't it CONSTANTLY be buried? And even if the time factor kicks in only when a page has been modified and not spidered, whats the point of giving AV fresh content when it will constantly be buried?
They better sort it out soon!!!
Any comments?
The position your pages achieve will be relevant to them meeting the elusive AV algo.
My concerns (as stated by myself and others in this thread) is the implications for domain filtering, the fate of 'free submissions', are pages/domains removed if not renewed after 6 months etc.
If pages already in the database were 'downgraded' or deleted the AV database would be extremely small, being populated soley by PFP pages.
I dont know of AV global market share, but those figures are no good.
I will wait too. As tedster said:
I'm concerned that I hear the sound of taps, softly playing in the distance.
If you click on the "Submit a Site" link, it takes you to their wonderous Express service instead of the old LS Add URL page.
If that is the case, someone needs to notify LS, because they're still claiming AV as one of their directory "partners."
I don't see it anymore.
Also I'm really scared to see a certain banner image on the submit a site link:
"New Program!.....Guaranteed Top 20 Position.....Click Here To Try It!"
ProBoost.com! Who are they? Well they are the providers of Infospider the Paid Inclusion to AV Program!!!
Call for a Quote Today!!!
Hmmm. A top company like Fujitsu is providing their name as a reference.
I think we are going to see the same as.... [webmasterworld.com...] with Inktomi
Ohhhh ho ho ho ho!
I cannot wait to see AV join the ranks of Go.com! Their sugar daddy is 900 Million in debt! The pay-to-include program or their ad deals won't help to pull them out of that.
I think the exploitation battle has just begun.
Infospider=Proboost=Worldsubmit=??
===the AltaVista Express Submit Management.
That is who they are.
Word has it that Alta recently dropped ALL of Proboost's doorway and cloaked pages.
It amazes me that Alta fired up this program soooo quick like before answering ALL of the questions that they MUST of had themselves.
After 6 months pages are dropped if not renewed??
Pages in the index prior and then paying will be dropped anyway if not renewed??
Pages in for years for free will be dropped?? IF that is the case, relevance will drop dramatically if all that is in the index are PFI.
All information only pages dropped?? Even ones that make NO money on their sites??
Geezee.... I could go on and on.
thank you
It just seems that providing search services is not just viable financially. Most are now incoporating paid enhancers, and rankings like incroprating GoTo and other PPC's. I wonder whether AV can afford to drop pages that are not paid, it is a viscious circle, theu will lose users becuase all they are getting is advertising spins on top ranks, and then they will lose advertisers and people who DO pay becuase nobody is using them.
People will continue to move to using the few places that provide relevance such as Google. And maybe Google, who need to get more revenue streams someday, by the very strength of their propularity and brand down the track will be in a position to come up with something that does not detract from their utility. Maybe even charging users for searching...
One revenue source that has not been discussed much of late is micropayments.. that lost popularity when eveyone jumped on the easier banner and ad revenue bandwagon, but if the technology can be worked out, that is one way where the good sites can make good revenue, without the need for tainting SE results. Surfers pay a small amount per use.. and Im sure that paying for valid, good data on the Web is gradually reaching commin acceptance.
User pays is really the only way that we can stop the Web becoming a mass advertising mall, that people will eventually stop taking seriously.
My ears stood up when I heard that they were including pages that were submitted months ago, and thought it was time to start pay attention to them again.
Now after reading this new spidering program, I sit back and wonder WHAT'S UP NOW?
If the amount of traffic I received from AV a year ago was on the plate, I would be credit card in hand and ready to go.
I have done the LookSmart thing and was not impressed. Now what makes this any different?
"Hey Alta show us the goods in the form of a white paper."
The "Alta Vista Express Inclusion" information is elusive at best.
I am getting really tired of this pay for nothing, form of marketing.
At the amount they are charging, Print Advertising is starting to look like a better deal.
At least you know were you appear and the circulation.
minnapple
Macguru, can you please tell me how you know the aprox. number of times a certain keyword is search on altavista and gogle??
Dear AltaVista Customer,
Thank you for choosing AltaVista. AltaVista will not crawl any part of
an URL that has been submitted using our Express Inclusion program. To
have these pages listed you will either need to submit them through
Express Inclusion or or basic submit program.
Thank you again for using AltaVista.

"It will generally take one week for your web site's page(s) to appear in the AltaVista search results. You can then perform a search for your web page simply by going to www.AltaVista.com and entering "url:" followed by the URL of your web page in the Search entry box. AltaVista will then display your listing from the Index."
07/14/2001 - Page does not appear in the AltaVista index.
Page submitted Ink (Position Tech) on 07/09/2001.
Iwon first to update on 07/12/2001.
Page appears in position 252 under optimized keyword.
Page is being outranked by non-targeted-keyword free hosted pages. (no title, no keyword frequency, low link pop)
Previous non-paid page is position 253.
MSN and others have not updated their index to include this page.
(Position Tech) Inktomi. Created new page and was able to switch the spider to it.
Old page with updated title is still active and bringing in more hits, new page is peforming very well.
So far I am happy with the Ink (Position Tech) and will continue to add pages with them. Good value so far at .002 a targeted visitor. Hope to improve on this.
Altavista (InfoSpider) Logs show it has a low return on investment. Lacks the tools to to improve its return.
