I noticed this AM that #1 from GoTo is now at the top as a featured site in position #2 just below the "non GoTo" featured site.

Sometimes GoTo #2, 3, 4 appear at the bottom, sometimes not.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld. And thanks for pointing out the change.

Wow, AV has gone from the most problematic GoTo display to arguably the most indistinguishable from an ordinary search return. The bottom of the page greenies must have not been performing.

Welcome to WmW always_here

Good find.
They may be testing to see what effect this has on revenue.
We will have to keep an eye on it.

I just tried it and I see featured sites at the top and GoTo at the bottom. They must be rotating.

Those "featured sites" actually are the top listings from GoTo.

There is something else there also, I am looking at a keyword search that I am paying for on goto. I this case there are two featured sites. The second one is the number one Goto, I don't know where the first one is coming from. I can't duplicate it out at Goto.

I'm sure the featured sites are not GoTo, it's just that there are a lot of familiar faces in there. Looks almost as if the Doubleclick people have identified some of the GoTo players and given them a call.

I just checked a number of clients who advertise on GoTo and nowhere else.

In some cases the first "featured site" is the first GoTo return. In other cases number one on GoTo is the number two featured site.

I can't tell where the other one's are coming from, but there always seems to be at least one from GoTo in there.

I spoke with a rep at Alta last week. The featured site number one term is available on a CPM basis. You need to call them, they will tell you how much demand (searches) there is for the term, and what it will cost you.
When there is no "in-house" buyer for the term, they go to GoTo.

Very interesting bigjohn. Any idea on price range?

You need to call them, and they'll tell you what the demand is <searches> for your term, and quote you CPM <sigh> The rep told me things start at $25 CPM. Most of the pitch was centered on selling skyscraper ads.
