Whats going on?

Here [search.altavista.com] is a SERP on a site i once did positioning for.

Look at the last modified on: 13-Jan-2008

Now where did that come from???

or try this [search.altavista.com]
Not only are the top 5 404's but #4 had a Last modified on: 11-Nov-2014

What is going on??

To tell you the truth I'm not positive were the "last modified" date orginates from. But since only about 27,000 pages out of almost 500,000,000 have these "impossible" dates, I would guess one of two scenarios:

1 - Av pulls the dates from the files own data and this site just has some "funky" files

2 - Av indexed all these pages at the same time, but happened to be having technical difficulties.
