The past 3 weeks I have been having a hard time getting listings in AV. Is something wrong or am I doing something wrong.

No, join the club. They are supposidly moving to pay-for-play full time. Just about everyone has said they've had trouble getting new pages into the db.

I've been hearing the same thing this week but not many details. Any word on how they are going to do it? Inktomi or Goto style you think?

I guess AV is getting greedy. Does anyone know how much longer it will take until AV is done and posts its prices. Or is it going to take a few months like Inktomi. It seems like submitting for free is going to be obsolete in another year.

"Inktomi or Goto style you think"

If they plan on rolling it out anytime soon it's probably going to be closer to an inktomi style. They just signed that deal with goto a couple months ago so their still under contract for at least another 4 months (if I remember correctly)

If they are going pay for play wouldnt it make more sense to purchase multiple Looksmart listings. Dogboy mentioned it a little while ago. For One Grand you can have 5 extremely good descriptions covering just about every possible keyword phrase. This seems more economical to me than paying $10 or $20 per page like the Inktomi deal. This is especially true if you have over hundreds of pages. These Looksmart listings would also help you immensely in MSN and Excite.

If Alta Vista does go the pay for play route are they just going to dump all the present listings and say payup or are they only going to ask money for new listings? I have all my sites indexed in AV and will be mighty pissed off if they just drop them or bury them so deep you will never get a hit.

It seems that everything will be pay for play soon. This is one of the main reasons I would rather just pay for some good directory listings which you will have permanently. The Inktomi PFP is only good for one year and then you have to pay those guys again.

I hope to god that Google and Fast dont go the same route.

If they are wise they will follow the Inktomi route except hopefully provide a better ranking system. If they start mixing in more databases like Looksmart and Goto, or even start their own like those two, they are going to lose out later on.

Searchers are going to get really tired of seeing the same companies/sites appear under every search engine. And they will not want to drill down each time to find something different.

To succeed they are going to have to offer something that can be reshuffled without tickin off the paying submitters.

I was just wandering how much of a effect Looksmart will have on AV after AV goes solo, if any. Is AV going cold turkey, or will they keep the Looksmart listings for a few months and then drop.

I recall reading here that they are also "promoting" Looksmart. I wonder how this plays in?
It seems to me that they are going to have GoTo as their "sponsored" listings, Looksmart as their "web sites", and their own "paid" database (once it's implemented) as "web pages". This way they will be generating revenue from every possible source.
This is pure speculation.
