It appears that AV are using a new database during their testing of their goto paid listings. I have not looked too closely at my logs, but the database seems to have been built by visits from all those mercator spiders that we saw in October and November.

You may be right, mark_roach. When I run queries url: www.mysite.com at Alta Vista recently, I've seen results toggling between 3 pages found and 520 pages found. I would certainly seem that there are two databases involved here.

I used to get a lot of traffic from AV. But a couple of months ago, it looked like AV decided to ban my site (I have no idea why ... I was behaving ... unless AV has began banning or peanlizing unpaid shopping sites, which I am very suspicious is happening) and began listing only the home page. Then AV began reporting the home page plus two pages I have listed in DMOZ. More recently, it began toggling between listing those three pages and listing 520 pages (which would be the whole site). Also, a trickle of traffic has returned, but from pages that are buried very deep. These pages used to draw good traffic so it appears they are being subject to a new algorithm.

Here's what I found out yesterday from one site of mine.

From June 2000 to Nov. 2000 I had one doorway_root_index page(page A) in Altavista's results.

On Nov. 5 I replaced that page with another doorway page (page B) and submitted it again.

On Dec. 12 I replaced the doorway page again (page C). Re-submitted it then too.

Page B was displayed in Altavista's results the last week of December.

Then from Jan. 2 - Jan.7 (Page A)'s was diplayed again in their results (don't know why)

Now since Jan.8 (page B) is back in Altavista's results.

I have not seen (page C) listed at all yet.
