Getting Listed on AltaVista

First of all I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. A colleague referred me to this site and I am very interested in learning some good search engine listing tactics. I currently own a web design firm and personally do ASP programming, database integration, etc. None of my pages are optimized for search engines. I was wondering what is the best thing I can do to get my page listed on a search engine such as AltaVista. I would like to add an Internet Marketing department to my company, but first I need to know what I'm doing. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much.
Regards,

Shawn Berg

Greetings fellow Bay area domain dweller.

I asked the same question about av a few days ago...seems av is in flux. No one is sure right yet but it appears they are using Look$mart to some degree.

The big guys will have to step in and answer specifics...I just wanted to say hi.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Shawn.

Getting listed is not the problem. Getting ranked is and the answer is: read, read and then read some more - right here at WebmasterWorld and its sister site
[searchengineworld.com...] By the time you have read everything, you'll be a prominent expert fully entitled to charge top dollars for Internet marketing advice.

Here are a couple of good WebmasterWorld discussions for beginners:

and this thread, where BoneHeadicus got answers so good that I dropped a flag for my own use:

Btw: Noticed that you posted the identical question in the Google forum. FYI: it is not necessary to post more than once. The moderators here are very proactive, so question generally never go unanswered for more than 24 hours - weekdays anyway.

Seems like an interesting page, Marcia. But how does one read it for more than 0,5 seconds at a time?
