AskJeeves will stop accepting advertiser payments for inclusion in its searchable Web database, in a move to draw competitive lines between it and Yahoo's new search engine.Jim Lanzone, vice president of product management for AskJeeves, said on Tuesday that after 18 months the Internet search company will cease Index Connect, its paid inclusion program. Paid inclusion allows advertisers to pay fees to have large numbers of Web addresses indexed more regularly in search engines -- a service that Yahoo just re-launched and that No. 1 search site Google denounces.
After much testing of paid inclusion the company found that it can negatively sway search results -- producing more commercial and irrelevant lists of Web sites, Lanzone said. Ultimately, that hampers the search experience, he said.
"We're never going to mix church and state again," Lanzone said.

I think this just refers to the Index Connect program.
Now, this is a joke or what? The PFE is born, Pay For Exclusion?
And what about FREE submission in Teoma index?
This is a flat fee, 12 months subscription into the Ask Jeeves index, which is regularly spidered.

So, no - it's not funny at all!
They did tune in the early days, and decided not to give IndexExpress clients any "special treatment".. They even went as far to insure that we didn't even use the word "Teoma" in tracking parameters, for some reason....
I think it is a poor move.. The reason the income wasn't there for AJ, was that their distribution base was so poor. With the recent purchase of Excite.com, and associated properties, it blows my mind, why they would be dropping IndexExpress at this time? As those properties are "pure" PPC listings already?
Another case of BizDev not being able to control the ride.... :(

That is not CPC
And no, it’s not funny. It’s not funny that I spent $1000 two weeks ago for a service that claims I can substitute my urls, then changes its mind without warning and ignores my emails. It’s disgusting and illegal.

Ask Jeeves has ceased its Index Connect program, which was a CPC based, XML feed program (or trusted feed).
Trusted feed is only a part of the Paid Inclusion suite offered by Ask Jeeves through various resellers.
The Site Submit program, which is a flat fee per URL (which has no CPC component) is still avialable from Ask Jeeves, using the Submit My Site link.

I’m still irate that PT took my money and will not let me switch url’s. They won’t return emails. And strangely, every thread where I ask about it gets deleted.
It's good to see all the lively dialogue around the subject of paid inclusion. While we will be phasing out the Index Express feed program, we remain committed to the Site Submit product, which properly aligns the interests of users and site owners. Looking forward, we're actively working on new and innovative ways to put dynamic and deep-web content in front of users. As always, it boils down to relevance. Stay tuned…

First of all... congrats on the new purchase and the corresponding increase in your stock... pretty amazing.
More importantly... I want to applaud AskJeeves for making the decision to put your users first and dump the XML PFI program. I am very aware of how the XML feeds work and it is clear that they compromise the integrity of search results.
Please let Mr. Jeeves know that he has made a very wise move.
Finally, I agree with Steveb... if you really care about providing fresh results, you need to start deep crawling the entire web and including ALL content... not just paid content.
Please reply and let everyone here know... when will Jeeves will start spidering the entire web?

As mayor pointed out, quickly is the key. Go AJ Go! You can carve urself a unique strong-hold niche.
We will definitely be making some big strides over the course of the next year in terms of making our index bigger and fresher.
A free addurl page like Google and Yahoo would help, don't you think so?
