The total cash payout to former sites of their directory will share $250,000, or an estimated $50 maximum depending upon how many sign up. Class counsel will divvy up $600,000.

To file for claims you go here [aboutus.looksmart.com].

Looks like the lawyers are getting a better deal than the class action plaintiffs.

But the settlement has to be approved by the judge.

Do you expect alot of people to go for the $50?

I'm tempted but reserved...

I personally feel the settlement amount is a joke. Who in their right mind is going to fill out that form and submit it to LookSmart.

Wouldn't we all LookDumb? I mean, willingly giving your name to the same company that sc$*^ed me in the first place and ask for a measley $50.00 ... or less if too many people ask for payment!

I don't see any disclaimer from LookSmart saying that they won't use the list of names in any way shape or form. I wouldn't trust that company to just pay up and leave it at that any more than I'd trust them to list my web site in their (non-existant) directory for $300.00!

Its water under the bridge. I have washed my hands of them and have moved on to gr$$ner pastures.

The individual cash payment of up to $50.00 only applies to those that cancelled L$ before Sept 5th 2003, which probably isn't that many people. I suspect most took the so called "Free Clicks".

Personally I think this proposed settlement stinks. Now we have to put up with all these sites which have been allocated additional "Free Clicks" in the MSN results even longer. I was looking forward to seeing the MSN results showing primarily clean Ink....now there is another 6 months to wait.

The attorneys and Looksmart seem to be the winners here!

You have to love the way that they say that replies to their email won't be read!

I have already received 3 emails from clients and a phone call asking "What do we do about this Looksmart email?".....more expenses and time wasted due to doing business with L$.

Liane, actually I haven't yet received my own personal email from them either. I only know about it because of clients forwarding their copies of the email to me with questions about it.

If asked 2 years ago if one company could ever soil the PFI directory industry to the point of destruction I would have said "no way". Well done L$ you not only killed yourselves you killed the entire sector by creating huge amounts of general distrust for this type of operation!

No wonder we all get spammed by directories everyday trying to sell their wares....people just don't trust these operators anymore :(

One bad apple has spoilt the whole bunch!

I just got my email from LookSmart detailing my rights etc etc as a customer. It's a long read.

Liane, I'm with you. The form only asks if you agree to the terms and conditions laid out in the class action. If you agree to that is there any way we can be sure LookSmart don't use the info harvested for resell in order to recoup their loss?

I invested a lot of money in LookSmart Listings expecting them to remain permanent only to be ripped off by their shady dealings. I have neither time nor trust for this company. Sooner or later they should hang up their boots and leave the directory business altogether.

I'm more concerned about other things they may do with that list of names and web sites. I'm sure LS isn't happy about having to pay out one red cent. I don't imagine they would look too favourably upon those persons and web sites who file a claim.

I just don't want my name or my url involved in this paltry settlement issue. The repercussions could be much more costly!

I can't be bothered with LS anymore. They can keep their crummy $50.00! Its a bogus deal and hardly worth the effort.

I'm sure LS isn't happy about having to pay out one red cent.

T-Online is liable to Overture for up to $250,000 Euros for each day that they are in breach of their contract

LookSmart on the other hand is suggesting that all of their contract partners with which they are alledged to be in breach of contract with share $250,000. That's peanuts and they're probably thrilled to be paying as little as that.

Does anyone know if MSN intends on keeping the directory listings from Looksmart after all the free clicks are used up? It seems like they would have to be listed at least until June 2004 because there are alot of people that still have 75 more free clicks a month coming to them.

I say just ride out the free clicks, forget the fifty dollars and start looking at other directories.

>> I'm more concerned about other things they may do with that list of names and web sites. <<

Agreed. Looksmart are clearly capable of ANYTHING. Anyone foolish enough to deal with them, at any level, does so at their own risk.

I too am disappointed they weren't hit much harder, and will not be happy until they are wiped off the search map altogether. Surely it's only a matter of time.

I guess you can tell from that what I feel about being ripped off by them. And for the Looksmart muppets who I know regulalrly read this board.... we have long memories around here.

Very true Liane,

Knowing just how untrustworthy L$ are they could get up to anything with your contact details and URL.

The situation with L$ is regretable, it used to be the first place I went after DMOZ and Yahoo for a good directory listing. Since they betrayed their entire installed customer base by announcing and enforcing their move to PPC they have lost all their reputation with the SEO community.

They have destroyed themselves and have nobody to blame but themselves. Hopefully they will roll over and give up before long, afterall, you don't really get much bang for your buck now.

jcistheman is spot on, let them be. What's $50 in the grand scheme of things, especially when you put it aside the money invested in what was supposed to be a permanent listing. Time to check out and support other upcoming directories. I just added to JoeAnt and Google picked up the listing in a week or so. GoGuides are next on my list. Hopefully none of them go down the same road.
