The above stats were obtained from a company that measures popularity by placing counters on sites which are in categories best defined as "of interest to the general public", or the "average Joe".
Because this company uses on-site counters to measure results I believe it is one of the most accurate sources of SE popularity. Unlike Neilson/MediaMetrix info the sampling is huge and unbiased. The numbers are based on actual visitors to actual sites, no human intervention is involved.
I use it as a benchmark against my own 300+ sites, generally the numbers are inline. Ask Jeeves used to be inline as well, I'm a little confused as to what has happened there! It may be related to ask.com changing the way it reports referrers and I'll be interested to see if it bounces back in the future as the ask.com numbers reported definately seems on the low side. I see ask.com as number 5 in importance and a potential growth area.
