Appears to be a reasonable update at AV in terms of content not their fresh tags.

That sounds good. Last time I was there (few weeks ago...) at the prompt of somebody else, I noticed their UI was a bit better.
Still cr@p imho, but definitely a huge improvement. Perhaps when that, and the results get better, they can 'reclaim their fame' :)

I would make sense for Overture to clean up Alta and use them for backfill in Overture's PPC engine, send Ink packing, and compete head-on with Google and Yahoo.

Yes something has definitely improved with altavista search results. With the total cr@p that they had it's no wonder they lost the fame mentioned earlier. This loss of fame must also have been pretty significant, for example I'm number six on Altavista's SERP'S for a key phrase that normally gets around 30,000 hits a month on overture but the amount of traffic I'm seeing from AV is not even 1% for that keyphrase.
The question: Does anyone even use Altavista anymore?
