Paid Placement

Does anyone know anything about this?

I am a company in the UK and a company is currently trying to sell me a "paid placement" on the search engines, they say it is overtaking pay per click, and has already done so in the USA. Can anyone offer me advice on this please?

I've always been a fan of cutting out the middle men. Contact the SE's straight up, and ask them if its possible. From there, you'll either get it cheaper, or you'll get the truth.

When they say "paid placement" what exactly are they promising you?

That they will get me top in msn, aol, & freeserve using a generic domain name, & optimised gatweway page meaning that people searching from the toolbar will bring us up top, and also getting us higher in MSN, freeserve and AOL because they have a contract with them.

I have been in the business since 1998 and what they are telling you sounds like utter nonsense I'm afraid. what you need is good old fashoned search engine optimisation. you can find out how to do that by researching webmaster world.

Someone made a posting on this within the last couple of days, but i can't find it anywhere.

They gave a example of a kewyword in hotbot which came top... something about aquarium or fish supplies?

aah, well. stay well clear if i were you.

Might be the ign keywords thing where they try to get you to download some useless application that will hijak your browser aqnd take you straight to some advertisers site if you enter keywords right in the browser bar. If so it's not worth it.

Yes tosspot17, that was me, it was if you type "widgets" into hotbot.co.uk

check out the top result - a gateway page, optimised and got to the top by using a generic domain name and all the stuff detailed above apparently. And to an extent it seems to be working.

Also Skibum, if you type in "widgets" to your browser bar (don't have to have downloaded any software) it also jumps to msn where this site is also top of the list. What do you reckon? I'm skeptical but curious!
