Paying the registration/inclusion fee will have no affect on your rankings. This will only insure that your paid webpages will be included in the DB.

It's definitely worth it if you want in quickly with a new site and/or want to be able to make frequent adjustments and see the results quickly.
Ranking depends on the on-page optimization, from my personal experience. Nothing to do with paid or unpaid, it's the speed of inclusion and updating.

What agerhart said, but there is a tremendous benifit to it, the Inktomi robot comes around every 48 hours or so, making it very easy to improve the pages to rank better.

is the way for getting a good ranking in inktomi not the same way as for google? where could be the differences? i mean my title, my url, meta keywords, meta descrp, alt tags, files, link text, anchor links... they all contain my main keywords and i have a lot of good links from other sites.
so i had assumed i would get a good ranking in inktomi too - or am i wrong?

If you execute what you just mentioned above, you should have some good rankings in no time.
You didn't mention it, but like Marcia said above, the on-page variables (keyword density, etc.) apply as well.

I paid $25 for 3 pages about 10 months ago. Only those three pages are in the index. Those pages rank very well on google serps, some thing like page1 and page2 for keyword combinations which return half million results. So it will be a fair assumption that they are well optmized. But on inktomi the rankings are horrible .. I could not find out the rankings for the most important combinations .. because they are buried way too deep, but I did find my page on number 97 on a weird keyword combination that returns 101 results. I have no clue as to what could be wrong. I don't know if my case is an exception to the rule though :)
So in the end its no advice at all for you sorry :) .. even I will have to keep track of this thread coz I need it as much as you do.
