We're pretty excited to release Web Search 9 to the world. You can learn more about it here:

Let us know what you think!
Inktomi.
A) PDF and other Microsoft Office Formats Are Now Accessible (.doc, .ppt, .xls)
B) Claiming Database Size is Over 3 Billions Pages
C) Inktomi Now Provides Single Database to its Partners. Previously, many chunks or flavors of the database were was available to partners. However, because different partners offer different features and tweak the relevancy algorithm you will still see different result sets.

Inktomi Web Search refreshes the entire index every 10-14 days...
Having the largest index...
...over three billion Web pages.
Sounds pretty dang impressive there. Am I supposed to read that as Ink refreshes 3B+ pages every couple weeks? Or that it's *designed* to be able to do that (at some point, somehow...)?

Ability to deliver the right results for ambiguous terms even when most algorithms get it wrong. Web Search 9 can intelligently consider a user's intention from their query
I'd like to know more about this. If someone searches for "apple" how is web search 9 going to know if they're searching for the fruit or the computer manufacturer?
By allowing editors to tune Web Search 9, Inktomi provides the best defense against spammers that can corrupt search results.
Are the editors going to change the algo to deal with the problems or are they just going to manually ban sites?
manually ban sites?
That reminds me...we're talking about INK here. I've got the same concerns about the 'intentions guessing' part of the algo...how do you know?
Are you going to cookie users, and figure out their search 'expectations' based on what they click, and then rotate results? That could be interesting...
I would almost care trying CPR on this stiff, but probes show no life signs, since hours.
Ink, do you care making the effort for a single life sign? Just say your listening and consulting your 'partners', that would do.
Otherwise, I have got a tag ready for your toe.
The toe tag might be needed yet, if they don't have a slick powerplay ready to dominate the MSN spot.
If I've got two pay per click options on any engine, what's going to motivate me to sign up with the one that finishes last?
After all, LookSmart has the same Index Connect type setup for larger sites...given that, what's to stop all INK customers from simply jumping ship to LookSmart?
Ink, please find better ways to show your still with us. Answering questions could be a good start.
The toe tag is ready, only the date field was left blank. Still waiting.
Geotargeting right now is just for Index Connect customers, but we're currently looking at expanding the program based on interest.
Macguru, I'll let today's product announcement speak for itself. We're working hard on both the product and distribution sides of the house and are more excited than ever about where we're headed.

However, the most recent new page I have in the MSN/Ink index (other than PFI pages) was uploaded on July 30th .... The dozens of new pages created since then (on the same site) are still invisible.
Does anyone have any evidence that the Ink index is really being rebuilt every two weeks - or is this just a plan for the future which may or may not happen?
I'd be interested in the upload date of the most recent page any of you have in pure search or MSN.
I would love to take this one. because for 25$/page I have made a killing through ink. I know that I am one of the few supporters but I love it. Some things work and some things don't but when they work I get great (and relevant) results and make very good money.
As a friend has said, I can feel the love.
I also don't want all my eggs in the google basket and try to get/buy traffic from anywhere that gets me traffic that converts. If I'm making money I can spend it to make more.
Also, where do the 'custom summaries' come from?
Does this mean that Ink no longer takes 'on page' text and code to generate this?
How does one alter a 'custom summaries'.
Finally, it would have been great to have been given some more detailed information through resellers like PT for existing customers of PFI.
I may be a little off topic, but I also have a curious question for anyone who knows the answer. Why do Inktomi do not have their own search site, in addition to their partnerships with MSN, HotBot and all the others? It seems to work fine for Google, (which provides to AOL, Yahoo, Netscape as well) and to FAST/AllTheWeb which provides to Lycos and to more European SE. Why doesn't Ink follow Google's and FAST's example in this case?
Hope this doesn't now mean locking swords with editors who decide to apply their own artistic interpretation to SERPS. This will seriously de-value Ink if we start to loose positions on keyphrases due to an editor 'missing the point'.
Also, wonder how you challenge an incorrect or misleading summary? Sounds like a well intentioned feature which could be a can of worms for everyone involved.
to have an idea about how inktomi indexes the .pdf or .doc files I suggest you to try a search as.
keyword1 + keyword2 + doc
or
keyword1 + keyword2 + pdf
