Are there any tricks that can be used while dealing with Inktomi and MSN, like in Google?
"
As an Inktomi Search/Submit subscriber, your Web pages are ranked with Inktomi's normal relevance scoring algorithm. This means your Web page is ranked in the same way Inktomi ranks non-subscribers. Maintaining this consistency ensures the integrity of Inktomi search results and a quality search experience for users. Please remember that Inktomi Search/Submit subscribers are not guaranteed placement in the top page of results."

On most competitive, high traffic terms, MSN provides a few pages of Looksmart results before they get to the secondary Inktomi listings. Thus, you are only going to see traffic from an Ink listing on MSN if you are optimized for a few more targeted, less competitive keyword phrases. Try running a search for your phrases on MSN and see how far down you need to dig to find the Ink results. If they show up at a reasonable level, and you are confident that you can rank well in the Ink algo, you should consider submitting your site to them.
Ink relies on a combination of keyword density, title & meta tags and link popularity. *Generally*, a well optimized Google site will rank well. FYI, Ink has recently expanded their index by a massive amount, so there's been some shakeup in results lately.
The sites that are indexed for free are fully spidered (meaning the spider will follow links) but are only indexed about once a month or so.
The sites that pay for inclusion are spidered every 48 hours or so and are NOT fully spidered. (meaning ONLY the page that you pay for will be indexed...the spider will not find your other pages based on you paying for one to be indexed.)
The advantage of paying is that you can make minor changes to your site and wait for the 48 hour update to see how they affect your rankings. Great for those who love to tweak their sites.
The advantage of a free listing is that it costs nothing and usually results in a good portion of your site being indexed, thus giving you more chances to rank well.
