Inktomi 's Index dropped several docoments today

including mine due to problems with their database

Doing a keyword search on MSN today I noticed that my url was not listed, first time not in results (usually listed 1,2,3 position), so I did a pure search with position tech and sure enough although I was indexed yesterday, I was missing there too.

So I emailed Position Tech and they informed me that Inktomi had dropped several pages last night due to problems creating the daily database, but that it had been resolved.

My questions are:

If I am still not seeing the url in the pure search, has it been resolved and returnable as I was informed?

Is anyone else seeing this with any of their sites today?

I noticed that about 7 of my inktomi listed sites are not in the results, these were all 3-4-5 results too. All of them were paid inclusion sites that have always been listed well and have completely dissapeared.

I wouldn't worry about it, as INK obviously has a problem the database. I just ran several pure INK searches and they are totally littered with irrelevant results. I'm sure they will get it sorted out soon enough.

I also had the same problem with my url. I was unable to see my listing which has been in the top 10 consistently for several keywords and after about 8.5 hours my url returned. I guess INK is having db problems and is working on correcting them

The ROI dropped drastically after the algo change on August 8th for my pages.

So either I take time to redo the pages to match the new algo on old pages or let them expire. I have been letting them expire

On newly submitted pages I either match the algo or offer the client some subsitute product at no cost. I have begun to offer substitutions.

All choices remove money from my pocket. At least in the beginning.

I have decide not to sign up any new inclusion clients for a period until I am sure the algo is not going to change again.

As far as breaking the new algo, I have not. To much clean up left after the August 8th drop in traffic. I will once I am sure the algo is stable.

I don't think an alogo change is what happened. I think Ink went out and indexed every page imagineable ... so they could match the 2 billion pages indexed claim of other big guys. So all that trash they picked up diluted all the good pages we've spent money on indexing.

If my theory is correct, the traffic will never come back because there are millions upon millions of spammy new pages in the index that we have to compete with.

In my book Ink should reduce the annual price for paid inclusion to about $5 to be in alignment with the current traffic expectations.

Apparently, they had problems with their databases over the weekend.The documents are purported to be restored.

From my view, they still appear to be behind...let's hope they completely resolve this quickly.

I bet you are correct. One search term I was targeting had over 30 differnt domains each one cloaked and redirecting to the same site.
I report this to inktomi a couple of weeks ago. Nothing has happened yet. Spammy index for sure. Anyone (Yahoo) want to by a spammy index?
