There seems to be some newer boxes -- very similiar to the google advertiser boxes -- on the right hand side of one search results at altavista.com.

They appear to be coming from Overture.com BUT they are not the same as the "Sponsored Matches" that are featured as regular text at the top left of each search.

My question is, if these results are not coming directly from the top Overture results -- which they are not as they are not the same as the text results or the top bidders @ Overture -- then where on earth are they coming from???

Any help would be appreciated...Try some of your key terms.

good question...

the URL of the link involved has overture in it but i checked on my key terms and people not bidding for them in overture were popping up... i found they were also the same on each page for the same keyword...

They are overture ads. They show the top 4 on the left and 6-10 on the right. If there is more than ten ads for a phrase they roatate the ads on subsequent pages. Here's how they're generally displayed (if they show an ad sold directly by AV(says doubleclick on the rollover) these numbers are 1 off.)

Pg1
1-4 on the left, 6-10 on the right

pg2
2-5 on the left, 7-11 on the right

pg3
3-6 on the left, 8-12 on the right

etc.. etc..
