There's a lot of posts here that hint at these answers but I need some confirmation and definative answers. Hopefully these answers will provide a clearer overview of the services.

For Altavista, Inktomi (FAST and Teoma for that matter)

1. If you are already in the index is there any benefit to paying for a submission?
2. Do paid submissions get better ranking over free submissions?
3. Do paid submissions index more pages than free submissions?
3. Are search sites likely to drop your website if you don't pay for a submission?
4. Do the monitoring services the engines offer provide any benefit over simple log analysis reporting?

Thanks in advance.

1. Frequent Updates (can allow you to fine tune the perfect density much quicker)
2. no
3. not unless you pay them to
4. not generally
5. they are handy to track paid pages, but aren't the secret to success...
