Hi all,

I was recently hired by one of my clients to optimise and submit a new site to google. As I worked on getting links, I was surprised to find referrals from aol, altavista, msn and aj for the site. So it seems my site got included in inktomi.
I didn't pay and submit my url to inktomi so I am surprised why I am included in inktomi for free. Not, that I mind though !
Anyone here experienced similar?

Thanks.

Yes it is not unusual.

It is no so quick as via the PPI, but you can be lested for free if you are listed in the most important directories (Yahoo, DMOZ etc.).

It was quick - only about 15 days or so - and that surprises me.
The site is not in any of the directories as yet.

A lot depends on the keyword/phrase you've targeted.
You could see yourself included for free under "Indian Hulahoops", for example, if there were but a few others under that search.

Even with paid search, slurp will pick up body text and include variations of it in search results even though none of this text is included in any title, description or meta keywords. However, you will only find it coming up in non-competitive keyword/phrase searches. For example, somewhere in the body include misspellings of your main keyword. You may then find your site showing up under these misspelled keyword versions.

To get into Google would have taken having links, so Slurp could have found those same links.

nell, with one site the webmaster made one typo that's a mis-spelling, and there's actually a little bit of traffic from it.

nell :
this is for good competitive keywords on which even overture's top bids have been placed by competitors.

I too think this only to be the case most likely

no typo, good traffic - competitive keywords

haryanto :
What makes is interesting is that I am not in google top rankings for these keywords as yet, though I expect this to change soon, maybe after the next update.
