Why do they do that?

Let's say, for argument's sake, that I have the best website in the world for finding out how many calories you burn performing different activities. But it's not-for-profit, so I'm not willing to pay to have it spidered.

Let's say that if your search for "calories" it comes up #2 at Google and #1 at Yahoo, the two most popular search engines. But that at AltaVista and Ask it doesn't come at all because I'm not willing to pay.

Don't you think that if an AltaVista or Ask user figures out that they are missing out on some of the best websites they will start using another search engine?

Why aren't AltaVista and Ask concerned about this?

My opinion is people don't know any better. They have been using AltaVista for a couple years and are able to find enough to get by. They might not be finding the best sites but they don't know there are better sites out there.

I think thats why google is so popular. People know when they go to google that they get what they want and not who would pay.

Thanks for your replies.

I also wanted to be sure I understood correctly, and I guess I did or you would have corrected me.

Thanks, Peter

P.S.

In another post I mention that the other evening my website appeared in Ask (it was listed a long time ago and came back) and then diappeared the next day and I haven't seen it again. No one has responded to this curiosity.
