Inktomi - Direct Feed Program

How does the Inktomi Direct Feed program work?

I recently talked to two SEO companies that charge their clients on a pay per click basis -- and both indicated that they do not do traditional SEO (change the html of web pages) but instead feed keywords to Inktomi and also to Looksmart.

I have reviewed Inktomi's site and do not see a reference to this direct feed program. The companies that I talked with said they simply input their client web page urls in their database and associate specific key words to the url page -- and then feed the url with the keywords to Inktomi and Looksmart.

Has anyone had any experience with this procedure? If so, it would be nice to understand how this works as it does not seem to include having to change any of the code or content on a web page. Also, I wonder how one would sign up for this service with Inktomi or Looksmart?

I have been hearing rumors for awhile that ink was going to sell keywords and the pages would rank regardless of the content on those pages.

Also that no amount of SEO would be able to over come the listing because it is (or will be) the position that is sold and not just inclussion...

Great marketing product for INK but a really bad situation for the end user and smaller, shallow pocketed sites.

One sort of easy way to tell if it is the IC program is to look at the site and see if they have the potential for 1,000 plus pages.

If the answer is yes, it's likely to be IC But...

Has to be the Indect Connect Program. AltaVista has another similar program as well called Trusted Feed. These programs work on an XML feed directly into their database, usually with sites that have more thatn 1,000 pages. In layman's terms, you do send them your URL, a page title, keywords, description and some body copy. The engine then sends the page directly into their database. This helps if you have dynamic pages. It avoids the spidering process.

BUT...what those companies neglect to tell you is that it DOES NOT guarantee rankings within their own search results or partner search results. The ranking is still left up to the engine's specific algorithm. So, you still need to optimize your site.

There are no guarantees in SEO! Unless is PPC!
