Now it's really weird!

Yet more fun and games. Canada.com and Freeserve are now showing different results to the ones we have been used to over the past couple of weeks and some sites are making it out of the nether regions - but I can't work out how they are now ranking. On Canada.com for my benchmark 'Irish steam trains' has now moved from 145 to position 20 (it used to be #1 before all the messing) with 98% relevence - but look at the sites before it - what is the common denominator that makes them rank higher? It is no longer date! Is it site popularity? If so why are loads of free pages now listed higher? Any ideas?

On Freeserve my makemetop.com has moved to #1 on the word 'makemetop' but makemetop.com is my least linked and least popular site and is little more than a parked page and the next 10 sites are all 'link2go' sites which I've never heard of. My .co.uk site which is in dmoz, lycos directory etc, etc is WAY down. MSN and Hotbot do not seem to have changed yet from yesterday so do you think they are still working on the DB? I hope so!

things are still going down the pan at inktomi, did you have a contact at freesevre that was looking into inktomi for you ? there's been so much talk about this dam database.I can remember someone saying they had a contact there didn't know if that was you.

Today had an e-mail from BT (the only SE to reply, good old BT)

The last thing I heard from my contact at Freeserve was last Friday when they said they had not yet had a full answer from Inktomi but there was a problem with add URL rankings. On Freeserve, people who are using Freeserve Marketplace are meant to come up above the normal Inktomi rankings. Freeserve were having a problem getting this to work properly and asked me if I had any idea how Inktomi were now spidering!!!

The add URL problem is the same thing which Canada.com have been saying. Could be the search clusters are finding it difficult to cope with Inktomi's experiments as they filter in different ways and serve up different databases depending on usage, terms and relevence - but that's just a guess!

Any news from your Inktomi contact in London? At least BT have given a reasonably meaningful reply!

Looks like Inktomi has been doing some shuffling this morning. I see that the results are different from last night. But I still don't see any of my pages in. Bummer! Just what are they up to???

I was just looking at the spider activity for Inktomi. Lately, quite of few of the Inktomi spider seems to come by but I don't see any of them crawling. They may hit a single page and then the index page. But that's about it. I don't see it crawling.

the database is starting to show some of my listing but only if i do a exact search, which although "something is better than nothing" most of my clients only just about know how to search.

lets hope the database is starting to come back on line.
