I definetly think there is a NEW algorithm in play here.
My pages DO exist in the database(checked using Anzwers), even new submissions from last Friday appear in the DB. BUT....they are not even close to the top of the rankings.
Any ideas????????
>I definitely think there is a NEW algorithm in play here.
Well maybe, but what is that new algo? Everything new is buried, and only old out of date pages will rank, what kind of algo is that?
Is there a new spider IP none of us are aware of?
I think it's the likes of freeserve that may get an answer, but if inktomi is not giving them a direct reply as to whats happeing it make's you wonder if the problem is not a lot larger than any of us have beleaved to be.
I wonder if their db has been running with the wrong date/time on it and maybe the YK2 bug's just hit it :)
NOTHING would surprise me any more with Inktomi. It is such a pain for our clients. We have great rankings on all other SEs (even lycos.co.uk thanks to their directory) but traffic is still down by a good 70-80% because of Inktomi portals. All I'm doing now is submitting new pages/sites and re-submitting when any drop out hoping that they'll get it fixed sooner or later. It can't go on like this, it can't be doing their reputation any good. People (apart from SEOs) are starting to notice results are a bit stale!
one of my clients has lost over 85% of her traffic, shame as the sites really nice, nothing to do with the fact i made it.
I think the thing that's getting her P******* off is the other site's mainly within freeserve are really pretty naff (that's polite view), but they are still ranking, which as I'm sure you are suffering as well with the phone calls from clients about vanishing rankings.
I've already lost one (small minded P****) all because freeserve is his home page, the fact that all his keywords are in the top 5 on AV / AV.co.uk /Google/Northern light and most of them #1
oh well here's looking forward to another day
Are you getting MSN traffic from competitive keywords - one or two words in a phrase at the most?
We are getting MSN traffic, but only where there's not an older page with the same KW's. The little bit we are getting is where the Key Phrase is 4 or more words long (not muck to compete with it.
We have pages in both databases from the same domain(s) the old ones are preforming like they always did and the new ones are buried and off the scope.
That little ditty alone tells me there's no change in the algo just a change in how the databases are being presented.
If you have single or two word phrases "competitive" that are recent submits to INK, and are top ten or 20, I'd like to talk with you a bit more about it...
Thanks
Steve
See some MSN referrers on some "medium" competitive two word phrases, but when I plug the URL into a browser, I don't get the same set of results. Most of our clicks are of the three/four word variety, or two words within quotes.... :(
Direct Hit updating is our only saving grace over the past 10 days...
All the guessing about it being a way for INK to make us pay up is crazy. Even if they could get 1 percent to pay it wouldn't be as valuable as what they make off their portals. But, if their results are "skewed paid results", their service will be worthless and they will be dropped like a hot potato.
I'm just guessing but that looks like they are just working on their system. We all know MSN, AOL and the lot wouldn't continue to pay for such really bad results for very long. And, no doubt INK knows GOOGLE would love to have the rest of their business. (And right now that doesn't sound too bad to me either)
Do you think GOOGLE would miss the opportunity to point out INK's short comings to MSN, etc?
Inktomi will become a valuable traffic source again or they will be replaced by someone who is. I for one am not waiting around for the blessed event - rather am learning to blaze new trails...

There are several readily identifyable differences between the sites. The site INK ignores is much newer and only listed well on about half the major SEs (so far). It obvoiusly has substantially fewer of the random incoming links that grow over time as more people become aware of a site. Both sites have good content but the newer site appeals to much more limited audience.
The one INK likes is listed in the LookSmart directory (almost ALL of the pages, LookSmart loves this site!) and the one INK ignores is not. Could the key to good INK listings be this simple? I think I read somewhere, recently about an INK/LS connection... Remember, I asked you not to laugh!
Two questions and one thought. Question: How competitive is the keyword or phrase on your page(s). On say, a 1 to 10??? Are we talking about a word or phrase here? And if a phrase, how many words.
And, you mentioned the pages have aged in that position for 4 or 5 months. How long were the page(s) around before landing that position???
Steve
For the site INK doesn't yet list the target phrase is "cloaking script" and I consider it a one or two on the competitive scale. This site has existed and been submitted monthly since 4/2000.
My idea was that some of the members have numerous sites up. A quick check by those folks to see if the ones INK likes are also in LookSmart might be worth while... Easier said then done of course...
